Product Development

We build digital products that will serve the public for decades. We build according to important standards and policies, and reduce the burden of compliance through automation. Our approaches enable rapid releases of high-quality products to respond to changing needs.

Software Engineering

We write code to build applications. These are primarily web-based APIs and UIs built on open source frameworks such as Java SpringBoot, Ruby on Rails, Python Django/Flask/FastAPI, Node/Nest JS, React, and Angular.

Cloud Engineering

Applications run on cloud infrastructure including AWS, Azure, and Google. We design those application platforms to be scalable and reduce or manage cost. We use automation tools such as Terraform to do so in a repeatable “infrastructure as code” approach.

DevSecOps

Development, testing, security, infrastructure, releases, support, monitoring, and operations are all required to sustain a product. We design an entire engineering solution to incorporate these concerns holistically across the development lifecycle, rather than in responsibility silos by role or team.

Data Engineering

Many solutions require extensive processing and integration of data. We build data pipelines to move and transform data into a usable state. Performance and scale needs drive different cloud-native architectural approaches.

Data Science, Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning

Data provides new insights and supports decision making. Some data science techniques enable discovery of patterns and insights in data – essentially through various query and exploration techniques. Approaches such as predictive modeling, machine learning, natural language processing, and optimization help our customers make informed decisions or sometimes automate decisions.

Key Engineering Practices

  • Quality: Government services need to be reliable in function. Strong quality habits, including meaningful test coverage, give our clients the confidence to ship software frequently and respond to the needs of the public.
  • Bias Prevention: The more advanced systems become, including the usage of advanced analytics tools, the more opportunity for unintended bias. We must analyze solutions for disproportionate impact on any group, particularly vulnerable groups.
  • Accessibility+: Mission-critical services must be available to all, regardless of ability or quality of technology access. In addition to baseline Section 508 compliance, we strive to make systems highly usable for all users, regardless of assistive technologies used. We must also consider technical access, supporting broad device capabilities such as older or lower performing phones or computers.
